Subterranean Autonomy

Autonomous navigation for confined underground spaces

Result
2nd place
Event
EDTH London
Date
Feb 2026

An autonomous navigation system for confined-space exploration — tunnels, shafts and voids where GPS does not reach and a human operator cannot follow. Built over a weekend at the European Defence Tech Hackathon in London, where it placed 2nd.

The thinking behind it grew into a longer essay on why the next frontier is underground.

Status
Now a startup

An interceptor concept against jet-powered Geran drones, which fly faster than the propeller-driven drones most cheap interceptors are designed to catch. Built at the European Defence Tech Hackathon in October 2026, where it received an honourable mention.

The work is now being developed as a startup.

Event
EDTH London
Date
Jun 2026

An engine that fuses observations by where and when they happened, turning scattered reports into one consistent picture. Built at the European Defence Tech Hackathon in London in June 2026.

It was the highest-scored project of the event, but ineligible for the prize on a technicality unrelated to the build.

safely.bio

Know-your-customer checks for the people behind DNA synthesis orders: biosecurity screening workflows with auditable triage and verification, so that dangerous sequences do not reach the wrong hands.

Built at the largest def/acc hackathon to date, organised by BlueDot Impact with Apart Research, where it won the main prize in London. The concept is now being built as safely.bio by Phil Palmer, my hackathon teammate.

Team
Two people

A lightweight acoustic and visual pipeline for detecting and localising UAVs. It runs on modest hardware, is robust to noise and is designed to be deployed in the field.

Built as a team of two at the European Defence Tech Hackathon 2025, placing 3rd out of 200+ participants.

Built with Python, Signal processing, OpenCV

RNA Transformer

Designing mRNA sequences with transformers and diffusion

Type
Thesis, self-proposed
Model
Transformer + diffusion
Stack
PyTorch, CUDA

A proof-of-concept transformer and diffusion pipeline for de novo mRNA sequence design, aimed at proteins that do not occur in nature. Training is GPU-accelerated, and every generated sequence goes through quality and constraint checks.

The goal is fast exploration of the design space and ranking of candidates before anything reaches the lab.

Model
Graph neural network

A geoengineering co-pilot built on Neural-LAM, a lightweight graph neural network that simulates how interventions change the weather. Forecasts run from 3 to 57 hours ahead, with an interactive timeline and side-by-side scenario comparisons.

Won the Technical Excellence Prize (£500) at the SOTA Geoengineering Hackathon 2025.
